Renting a car in Corfu is the easiest way to reach hidden beaches, mountain villages and the west coast on your own schedule – but airport queues, insurance small print and narrow inland roads catch many first-time visitors out. This guide explains when you need a hire car, how airport pick-up works, what to check in your contract, and which local companies we list on Corfu Discovery. Browse trusted car rentals on Corfu Discovery or book a private airport transfer if you prefer to collect your car the next morning.

Do you need a car in Corfu?

Not everyone does – and hiring one you will not use is wasted money.

You probably need a car if: – You are staying in a villa, apartment or small resort away from Corfu Town. – You want west-coast beaches (Glyfada, Paleokastritsa, Porto Timoni) or villages like Old Perithia. – You are in a family or group and taxis for every day trip add up fast. – You are basing yourself in the north (Sidari, Acharavi, Kassiopi) and plan to explore.

You can skip the car if: – You are only in Corfu Old Town for a short break – see our getting around Corfu guide (blue buses cover the town well). – You are on an all-inclusive with no plans to leave the resort. – You are happy with green buses to major resorts – we have route-by-route guides for Sidari, Paleokastritsa and dozens more.

Most visitors who stay more than three days and want to see the island properly do rent a car at least once. For where to base yourself, see where to stay in Corfu.

Renting at Corfu Airport – how it works

Corfu Airport (CFU) sits about 3 km south of Corfu Town. Almost all major hire desks are either in the terminal area or a short shuttle ride away.

Typical airport pick-up flow:

  1. Book online – cheaper than walk-up in July-August and guarantees a vehicle class.
  2. Bring documents – driving licence, passport, credit card in the main driver's name.
  3. Counters & shuttle – some companies are in the arrivals hall; others meet you and bus you to a nearby lot (allow 20-40 extra minutes for this).
  4. Inspection – photograph every scratch before you drive off; disputes on return are common.
  5. Fuel – usually full-to-full; petrol stations near the airport are limited late at night.

Queue tips: Saturday arrivals in peak season (late June-August) are the worst. Land before 10:00 or after 18:00 if you can. Pre-paid fast-track or meet-and-greet from your rental company saves time when offered.

Flying in late? A pre-booked airport transfer to your hotel and collecting the car next morning from a town or resort desk is often easier than driving tired on unfamiliar roads.

Airport pick-up vs renting in your resort

Airport pick-up suits fly-and-drive holidays and anyone heading straight to the north or west coast. You collect the car as soon as you land and only deal with one booking. The trade-offs are summer queues, occasional shuttle delays to off-site lots, and driving on unfamiliar roads when you are tired after a flight.

Resort or town desk suits late arrivals and anyone who wants to settle in first. You can take a transfer to your hotel and collect the car when you are rested. Fleets at resort desks are often smaller, so book ahead in peak season.

One-way drop-off is rare on Corfu. Most operators expect you to return the car to the same branch where you collected it. Ask before you book if you need a different drop-off point.

Sidari, Acharavi and the north coast are about 40-45 minutes from the airport – many visitors rent in Sidari after a transfer. See our dedicated Sidari guide for resort car-hire notes.

What affects your final bill

Daily rates change with season, car class, transmission and how far ahead you book. July and August are the busiest months; automatics sell out first. Always compare the total price at checkout, not just the headline daily rate.

Watch for extras such as a young driver fee (under 25), second driver, child seat hire, extra insurance to reduce excess, and late return charges. Each operator sets its own rates – confirm everything on their listing page or booking form before you pay.

Insurance, excess & fuel – read before you sign

Greek hire cars typically include basic third-party insurance by law. The expensive decisions are about collision damage waiver (CDW) and the excess (the amount you pay if the car is damaged). – Excess varies by company and car class – read your contract before you sign. – Super CDW / full insurance can reduce or remove excess – compare the daily cost with your travel insurance. – Credit card block – expect a hold on your card; it is not the same as a charge, but it reduces your available limit until released. – Scratches on narrow roads – village walls and olive branches are real; walk around the car with staff and take phone photos. – Fuel policy – full-to-full is standard; missing fuel at return is charged at a premium.

If you are not confident on mountain roads, consider a smaller car rather than the largest SUV – parking and village lanes are tight.

Driving in Corfu – local tips

Corfu's roads are generally good on main routes; secondary mountain roads are narrow, winding and sometimes without guardrails. – GPS – Google Maps works; download offline maps. Signage to major beaches is decent. – Parking in Corfu Town – scarce in summer; use public car parks on the edge and walk in. See our Old Town guide. – West coast – allow extra time; distances look short on the map but roads curve. – Goats, buses, scooters – drive defensively, especially at dusk. – No drinking – Greece enforces strict limits; fines are heavy.

Scooters, ATVs & quad bikes – when they beat a car

For short coastal hops in a resort, a scooter or quad can be fun and easy to park. They are not a substitute for crossing the island or mountain villages. Operators set their own rates and licence rules. – Licence rules apply – EU licence for scooters; quads often 21+. – Helmet is mandatory; roads to beaches can be busy. – Browse motorbike & quad rentals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Corfu?

EU/EEA licences are accepted as standard. UK, US, Australian and many other national licences are widely accepted too, but some companies still ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well – check the listing terms when you book. The permit must be carried with your original licence.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Corfu?

Most companies require drivers to be 21 (sometimes 23 for larger cars) with at least one year of licence held. Under-25 surcharges are common. Scooters and quads may have higher age limits.

Is automatic transmission easy to find?

Yes, but automatics cost more and sell out in peak season. Book early if you cannot drive manual – many Greek fleet cars are manual.

Can I park easily in Corfu Town?

Summer parking in the historic centre is difficult. Use signed public car parks on the approach roads and walk in, or visit town on a day when you are not staying there. Our Old Town guide has practical tips.

Is one-way car rental possible in Corfu?

Rare. Most Corfu operators expect return to the same branch (airport to airport, or resort to same resort). Ask before booking if you need a different drop-off.

How much is the credit card deposit for a hire car?

It depends on car class, insurance level and company policy. Your card issuer may show a hold for several days after return even when the car is fine – check with your rental company and bank.

Is driving in Corfu safe for nervous drivers?

Main roads are fine. Mountain villages and west-coast lanes need caution – take your time, use lay-bys, and avoid the largest SUV if you are uncomfortable with width. Many visitors combine a few days with a car and a few days using buses.
