Tucked into Corfu's north-east coast, Kassiopi is the island's most appealing harbour village – upmarket but unpretentious, with a working fishing port ringed by tavernas, a backdrop of green hills, and a string of pretty pebble coves on its doorstep. It's a favourite of returning visitors, families and couples who want character and calm rather than big-resort buzz, and it sits at the heart of Corfu's "Durrell country". This guide covers Kassiopi's beaches, where to stay, the best tours, where to eat and how to get around. We're the Corfu-based team behind Corfu Discovery, so the practical tips come from knowing this coast first-hand.

Overview & vibe

Kassiopi blends history and holiday ease. The village grew around a natural harbour once guarded by a Byzantine castle, whose ruins still crown the headland. Today the waterfront is a relaxed parade of fish tavernas, cocktail bars and boutiques, busy but never brash. The crowd skews towards couples, families and the villa set – this stretch of coast, including nearby Kalami and Agni, is where the Durrell family lived, and where ITV's The Durrells was filmed.

It's greener, hillier and more refined than Corfu's big package resorts, with turquoise water lapping small coves rather than long sandy strands. Evenings are about a slow dinner by the harbour and a cocktail watching the boats, not clubs and neon. That balance – genuine village life, good food, beautiful swimming, and just enough buzz – is why Kassiopi inspires such loyalty, with many guests returning year after year.

Best beaches in & near Kassiopi

Kassiopi's beaches are small, pebbly coves with exceptionally clear water – beautiful for swimming and snorkelling rather than sprawling out on sand:

  • Kalamionas & Imerolia – two pebble coves either side of the village, within walking distance, with calm, clear water and a taverna or two.
  • Bataria – a small, scenic cove below the castle.
  • Avlaki – a longer pebble bay just west, popular for windsurfing and family swimming, with a couple of good tavernas behind.
  • Kerasia & Agni – gorgeous quiet coves a short drive or boat-taxi away, famed for their waterfront tavernas.
  • Kalami – the bay of the "White House" where the Durrells lived; idyllic and crystal clear.

Because the beaches are pebble, water shoes are worth packing, especially for children. The clarity, though, is some of the best on the island. For more of Corfu's best, see our best beaches in Corfu guide.

Where to eat

Kassiopi's harbour is one of the best places to eat on the north coast. Expect fresh fish and seafood, Corfiot classics like sofrito, pastitsada and bourdeto, and good Italian-influenced cooking – a legacy of the island's Venetian past. The neighbouring coves of Agni (three famous waterfront tavernas) and Kerasia are a short boat-taxi away and worth the trip for a long lunch; many tavernas there will even collect you by boat if you call ahead. Try Corfu's specialities – our Corfu food & dishes guide explains what to order, and a food tour or cooking class is an easy add-on.

Getting there & around

A typical day in Kassiopi

Kassiopi rewards a slow pace. Mornings might be a walk to Kalamionas or Avlaki for a swim in clear, calm water, or a self-drive boat out to Agni and Kalami to find your own cove. Lunch is a long one – fresh fish at a waterfront taverna, perhaps in Agni where the boat can drop you at the door. Afternoons drift between swimming, a stroll up to the Byzantine castle for views across to Albania, and a coffee in the harbour. As evening comes the village glows: tavernas fill, cocktail bars buzz gently, and the boats sit still in the bay. There are no clubs and no neon – just good food, beautiful water and an unhurried, slightly upmarket calm that keeps people coming back.

Best time to visit Kassiopi

Kassiopi is lovely across the long season, May to October. July and August are warmest and busiest, with the best swimming weather – and the highest demand for the village's limited villas and apartments, so book early. June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, quieter coves and better value, ideal for couples. Spring and autumn are wonderful for the coastal walks between the bays, when the olive groves are green and the heat is gentle. Being on the sheltered northeast coast, Kassiopi's coves usually stay calm and clear. See our best time to visit Corfu guide for more.
